An imaginative version of Victor Hugos famous story came to Tintern Abbey 21-26 July 2019 courtesy of a French group of performers..
Circus acts, dancing, singing and fire , in a traditional circus ring within the Abbey Grounds , combined to tell the sad tale of the Hunchbacked bellringer and Esmeralda the ill treated gypsy girl. Delivered a little in French and a little in English and set in 15Century Paris it was nevertheless described as an avant garde performance.
In unusually warm weather the sellout audience included guests from Monmouthshire Cottages -and as dusk fell over the Abbey and flames were sent into the sky the recent burning of the real Notre Dame seemed ever closer . A memorable event.
